Verified 2026-08-03 — Apple pulled Telegram from the App Store worldwide

The door closed. These got in first.

On 3 August 2026 Apple removed Telegram from the App Store worldwide, with no explanation. Existing installs still run. New ones are impossible. On iOS there is no second door — so a brand-new iPhone with Telegram already on it is now something that cannot be manufactured again.

What actually happened

Reported 2026-08-03 · 9to5Mac · BNO News

Shortly after 01:00 GMT on 3 August 2026, users worldwide found they could no longer download Telegram from Apple's App Store. The listing was simply gone. Apple has given no official reason. Telegram, which reports more than a billion monthly active users, went from universally available to unobtainable on iOS in the time it takes to push a database change.

Existing installs keep running. New downloads are blocked on iOS with no official reason given by Apple.

Nobody outlawed Telegram. One company stopped carrying it — and on iPhone, that turns out to be the same thing.

Why this matters more than one app

The interesting part is not the delisting. It is what the delisting revealed.

1

A store is not a law

Telegram remains perfectly legal to own and use in the United States. No court ordered this and no statute compelled it. A private company revised its catalogue.

2

But iOS has only one door

There is no general sideloading on a US iPhone and no official second channel. When the only store stops carrying software, that software ceases to exist on the platform. The distinction between "delisted" and "banned" survives on paper and dies in practice.

3

Open platforms just shrugged

The same day, macOS, Windows, Linux and Android users carried on installing Telegram directly from telegram.org. Nothing broke for them. That is the entire argument for open distribution, demonstrated in a single afternoon by accident.

4

So the installed copy became the artifact

An iPhone that already has Telegram on it is now a record of the last moment the door was open. Not because the software is rare, but because the permission to receive it was revoked.

One event, two very different platforms

This is also why only one of the two devices below carries a premium.

PlatformCan you still install Telegram?How
iOS / iPhoneNo App Store is the only distribution channel. Delisted means gone.
macOSYes Direct download from macos.telegram.org, outside the Mac App Store.
Windows / LinuxYes Direct download from desktop.telegram.org.
AndroidYes APK published directly by Telegram, plus third-party stores.

The two devices

Both brand new. Both opened only to install and verify Telegram. Priced honestly: the iPhone is scarce, the MacBook is not, and this page will not pretend otherwise.

iOS is a sealed platform. With the app delisted, a device that does not already have Telegram on it cannot get Telegram. This one does.

If this device is erased, Telegram is gone. Delisted iOS apps generally cannot be re-downloaded, including from Apple ID purchase history. The installed copy is the asset. Do not erase, restore, or reset it.

What ships

  • Device with Telegram installed and verified launching
  • Original box, cable and unused accessories

Sold as a flagship MacBook that happens to arrive configured. The macOS Telegram client is still downloadable directly from telegram.org, so this machine carries no scarcity premium and is not priced like it does.

Freely reinstallable. The macOS client is still published directly at macos.telegram.org, outside the Mac App Store. Erase this machine and you can put Telegram straight back on it.

The case against buying this

Read this before you send money.

It is a decaying asset. While Telegram stays delisted, the iOS app receives no App Store updates. No new features, and no security patches. A messaging application that stops being patched gets less safe every month it sits there. If you want Telegram for serious private communication, an unpatched frozen build is arguably the worst way to have it.

Apple may simply undo this. Telegram was pulled once before, in February 2018, and restored after the developer made changes. If that happens again the scarcity premium on the iPhone evaporates overnight. Nobody on this page knows what Apple will decide.

One wrong tap ends it. Erase, restore from backup, or reset the iPhone and the install is almost certainly unrecoverable — delisted apps generally do not come back even through Apple ID purchase history. You are buying something one settings menu away from being destroyed.

And you may not need it at all. If your goal is simply to use Telegram, a laptop, an Android phone, or a desktop will do it today for free. The iPhone is only worth a premium to someone who specifically wants it on iOS.

Questions

Straight answers, including the unflattering ones.

Is Telegram illegal now?

No. Telegram is legal to own and use in the United States. What happened on 3 August 2026 is that Apple removed it from the App Store worldwide. That is a distribution decision by one company, not a law. Several countries have taken their own separate actions against Telegram, but a delisting and a ban are different things and this page does not conflate them.

Why does a delisting matter so much on iPhone?

Because on iOS the App Store is the only door. There is no general sideloading in the United States and no official second channel. When the store stops carrying an app, the app stops being obtainable on that platform entirely — even though it is perfectly legal and even though a billion people still use it.

Can I not just reinstall it from my purchase history?

Generally no. Apps removed from sale usually stop appearing in the Purchased list and cannot be re-downloaded, even by an Apple ID that had them before. There are occasional exceptions, but you should assume the install on the device is the only copy you get.

So why is the MacBook not priced as a scarce item?

Because it is not scarce. Telegram's macOS client is still published directly from telegram.org, outside the Mac App Store, so anyone can install it on a Mac in about a minute. The MacBook here is sold as a flagship MacBook that happens to arrive configured. Charging a scarcity premium for it would be dishonest.

What happens when Telegram stops getting updates on this iPhone?

That is the real cost and it should be weighed seriously. While the app stays delisted it receives no App Store updates, which means no new features and — far more importantly — no security patches. A messaging app that stops being patched becomes more dangerous over time, not less. This is a decaying asset.

What if Apple puts Telegram back?

Then the iPhone's scarcity premium disappears. Apple restored Telegram after a temporary removal in 2018, so this is a real possibility. No claim is made here about what Apple will decide.

Disclosures

  • This is a private sale of lawfully owned hardware. Not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to Apple Inc. or Telegram Messenger. All product names are the trademarks of their respective owners.
  • Telegram is legal to own and use in the United States. Apple delisted it from the App Store; that is a distribution decision, not a law.
  • Delisted iOS apps generally cannot be re-downloaded, including from Apple ID purchase history. If the iPhone is erased or restored, the Telegram install will very likely be gone for good and cannot be restored by the seller.
  • Telegram on iOS can no longer receive App Store updates while it stays delisted. Over time that means no feature updates and, more importantly, no security patches.
  • No claim is made that Apple will or will not reinstate the app. If it returns to the App Store, the scarcity premium on the iPhone disappears.
